Newcastle’s Central Arcade

IBA were appointed to design and manage the refurbishment of the grade 2* listed Central Arcade.
The floor running through the arcade was finished with glass mosaics which had significantly deteriorated which in turn had allowed water to penetrate and corrode the reinforcement in the suspended floor structure.
Unable to source a supply of the original mosaics, IBA sourced a company in the USA who manufactured mosaic tiles in a large range of colours. IBA undertook detailed surveys of the existing patterns and working with the manufacturer they were able to recreate the patterns of the original floor.
The whole floor structure had to be replaced whilst keeping the Arcade open for business. IBA managed the construction project, much of which was undertaken overnight.
