Swimming Pool at Bavington Hall
Leisure, Residential // Belsay
The Client commissioned IBA to design a new indoor swimming pool as an extension to the Grade 2 listed Bavington Hall. The site chosen was the existing service entrance courtyard which was surrounded by a stone wall on three sides with attached outbuildings. The outbuildings were demolished but the stone wall was retained.
IBA designed a bespoke glulam-framed structure which bridges over the retained stone wall, with the supporting structure extending over the edge of the building.
This was to support a slated pitched roof with glazing between the top of the wall and the underside of the roof to let natural light shine inside, while still providing an element of privacy.
The remaining wall is glazed to the courtyard. A lightweight Insulated glazed structure links the new pool to the existing house, to outline the two different forms individuality.
