Dame Allens Queens Extension
The Dame Allens extension presented a challenging infill site, with limited available space and a number of existing underground services that had to be carefully considered throughout the design process. The project was developed to expand the school’s sixth form facilities, providing students with a modern environment that supports both independent study and collaboration.
A key requirement from the client was the creation of a quiet study hub alongside a café space where students could work in a comfortable and relaxed setting. The original concept featured a central atrium to introduce natural light and create a strong visual focal point. However, due to budget constraints and fire strategy considerations, this was replaced with a biophilic ceiling feature that delivers many of the same wellbeing benefits while providing a more practical and cost-effective solution.
To maximise daylight within the deep floor plan, a large south-facing curtain wall was incorporated into the design. This allows natural light to penetrate deep into the building, creating a bright and welcoming study environment while reducing reliance on artificial lighting.
In addition to the open study and café areas, the extension includes a range of more private accommodation, including meeting rooms for both staff and students, as well as dedicated office spaces. Together, these facilities provide a flexible learning environment that supports a variety of teaching, study, and pastoral activities while making the most of a constrained and technically complex site.
