Beaumont Park Medical Centre has been designed to meet the growing demand for a modern medical practice in the Monkseaton area. The existing facility had become outdated and no longer provided an effective working environment for practitioners or the level of service expected by patients. The NHS commissioned us to design a larger, purpose-built medical centre that would better serve the local community.

The new site offers significantly improved accessibility, with excellent links to public transport, including a bus stop directly outside the building, and is conveniently located opposite a large Sainsbury’s supermarket. This makes the practice easier to access for both patients and staff while placing it within a well-established local hub.

The project faced several challenges from the outset, particularly during the planning process. The planning committee requested that the building adopt a more residential appearance, despite the surrounding context comprising a mixture of both commercial and residential developments. As a result, the design was carefully refined to balance the committee’s aspirations with the functional requirements of a modern healthcare facility.

The façade colour palette was selected to complement the surrounding green landscape while also reflecting the NHS identity. Soft greens and other familiar healthcare colours were incorporated to create a calm and welcoming environment, helping to promote a positive experience for patients and visitors.

A key objective of the design was to minimise operational costs while maximising energy efficiency and occupant comfort. A heat recovery ventilation system was incorporated throughout the medical centre to provide a consistent internal environment while reducing energy consumption. During the design process, the project also targeted BREEAM accreditation, with particular attention given to providing generous levels of natural daylight throughout the building and creating a safe and secure working environment for staff. The layout was carefully considered to ensure staff had clear lines of sight, appropriate escape routes, and spaces that support both wellbeing and efficient day-to-day operations.

Overall, Beaumont Park Medical Centre provides a contemporary, sustainable healthcare facility that responds to the needs of the local community while delivering an efficient, comfortable, and welcoming environment for patients, visitors, and healthcare professionals.
