St James’ United Reformed Church

Heritage // Newcastle upon Tyne

St James’ Church is a grade 2* listed building in the centre of Newcastle. With a dwindling congregation the church elders decided they need to breath new life into the building to attract new members and extend the uses of the church.
IBA proposed a scheme to provide a multi function space by the introduction of new elements into the corners of building. At the same time, the dark interior of the Church was cleaned and painted, new and refurbished lighting introduced and new underfloor heating provided. Externally, new accessible entrances were provided, the building was reroofed and the stonework cleaned.
Funding was provided by English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund,
