New Sixth Form Centre
Education // Newcastle upon Tyne
The new Sixth Form Centre provides dedicated teaching spaces, a large open plan IT suite, a Cafe, seminar rooms for multi-media teaching and a quiet area for personal study. The Centre also houses a modern dance studio with changing areas which caters for professional dancers and meets the needs of the schools’ pupils, some of whom compete at an international level.
The design of the building on a restricted site presented a considerable challenge. Initially there were considerable objections to the scheme. Through a series of presentations to the neighbouring residents, those objections were eventually overcome.
The school remained open and operational throughout the construction of the project. IBA were responsible for developing a programme phasing a series of temporary accommodations to facilitate this. The building was opened officially by the Queen in November 2005.
