Crook Medical Centre

Health // Durham

IBA were commissioned to design a new medical centre as a replacement for an existing facility occupying part of the site to be developed.

Due to the need to retain the existing facility in operation the construction, works were split into two phases. The first being a single storey building providing accommodation for 10 GPs, multi purpose room and meeting space as well as an outside open garden space. Once this had been completed the existing building was demolished to make way for the construction of phase 2 whilst patients utilised the completed phase 1.

Phase 2 is a two storey building comprising the creation of further clinical spaces in the form of a treatment room, nurse clinic and minor operations room as well as the main reception and patient waiting area on the ground floor. The first floor provides administration and welfare space for the staff in the form of offices, meeting room, staff room in addition to patient record storage space. The building facade is predominantly brickwork in design incorporating feature arches and piers to the ground floor window surrounds.

A two storey feature tower accommodates the main stair and lift enclosure to the southern corner of the building and a curved two storey arched window provides natural light into the enclosure.
