IBA Architects were appointed by Robertson Construction to interpret Newcastle Universities design proposals to provide a fully comprehensive fast-track construction package for two new extensions to their existing pavilion building at Cochrane Park.

The new fully accessible two-storey changing block, complete with double height reception atrium,which compliments the existing 1930’s building. The extension exploits a contemporary pallet of materials including a striking secret fix vertically clad rainscreen cladding system with two-storey thermally broken double-glazed curtain walling providing views over adjacent all-weather artificial pitches.

A new single-storey gym with double glazed curtain walling provides Newcastle University with a unique rowing ergometer training centre .In addition, we added a flexible multipurpose space with direct access off existing refurbished changing facilities.

New access, parking and landscaping with sustainable drainage systems completes Newcastle Universities Centre for Physical Recreation and Sport facilities.

IBA Architects met Robertson’s tight programme delivering the project on time opening in Spring 2019.
